Freespace Dance believes an education in the arts
is an essential part of the academic curriculum. Our dance assembly program is
designed to teach students about dance as an art form, keeping with the NJ
State Content Standards in Dance. Artistic Director of Freespace Dance, Donna
Scro, uses this lecture demonstration to explain what has inspired her to make
dances. Shapes, patterns and numbers, children’s play, an abstract
transformation of a chrysalis, group and family dynamic are the topics she
discusses as the company demonstrates how these ideas can become a dance. Basic
composition skills are introduced to the lower grades and explored deeper with
the older grades. Through audience participation, the students are encouraged
to find their own inspirations to make dances and learn basic tools in order to
begin to form those inspirations. “Dance Inspirations” leaves open the
possibility for further discussion and exploration of the students inspired
dance ideas.Freespace

American Repertory Ballet brings Jeremy Tankard’s Grumpy Bird to the
stage, choreographed by Matthew Keefe with music from Mozart. This is the story
of a Bird who wakes up feeling grumpy. Too grumpy to eat or play -- too grumpy
even to fly. "Looks like I'm walking today," says Bird. He walks past
Sheep, who offers to keep him company. He walk past Rabbit, who also could use
a walk. Raccoon, Beaver, and Fox join in too. Before he knows it, a little
exercise and companionship help Bird shake his bad mood. American Repertory Ballet;

Luna Mexicana is the newest offering by the Lustig
Dance Theatre and is inspired
by the Mexican “Day of the Dead” Festival.Luna Mexicana brings to life this
celebration of life and death through dance featuring 10 company dancers with
choreography by Graham Lustig. As described by Robert Johnson in a review in
the Star Ledger, “Lustig manages to combine a playful attitude with touching
reverence for the spirits of the departed. A family of ghouls totters in
stiff-legged from lying in their graves, summoned by the prayers of a living
woman (Engelhard). She screams, but soon they all loosen up, encouraged to
party by a fabulous suite of Mexican music that includes indigenous
instruments, plaintive “rancheras” and witty electronic fusions. Amid the
skirt-swishing gaiety, individual performances stand out in a series of
vignettes: notably the high-flying “deer dance” of Justin Melvin; a rickety
duet for a Bride and Groom (Petteway and Kelby Brown), who clearly waited too
long to tie the knot; and a floor show in which Engelhard is courted by a trio
of love-struck skeletons.” Luna
Mexicana comes complete with a Study Guide and Pre/Post
Performance discussion. Lustig Dance Theatre; Grades
